INVOLVEMENT ON CAMPUS

Organizations I AM involved with.

  • IC Unbound Dance Company: My fourth semester as a choreographer and fifth as dancer for Ithaca College's largest and longest running dance company on campus. This semester I tackled a new style to choreograph: Contemporary.

  • New York Film and Television Student Alliance (NYFTSA): I continued my role as Vice President as we successfully planned the annnual NYFTSA summit.

  • Writing Center Tutor: My third semester working as a peer tutor.

  • Buzzsaw Magazine: I continued my role as News & Views Editor while also talking on the position of Co-Ministry of Cool Editor, mainly editing film and music reviews.

  • Ithaca NLGJA: With the introduction of the college's first chapter of the National Association of LGBTQ+ Journalists, I helped get the organization up and runnning as treasurer.

  • ICTV: I challenged myself by taking on the role of content producer for ICTV's NewsWatch Sunday, a live 30-minute news show that airs weekly.

  • The Ithaca Voice: I did another internship, supported by the Department of Writing, as a reporter at the local digital nonprofit news organization.

  • Leadership Lesson:

Stepping into a new role as content producer for ICTV was a huge learning lesson for me as a leader. I really learned the importance of taking it upon myself to take more initiative without having to be asked first to do something — especially in live television, there's always something that can be done, something that can be prepped to ensure smooth sailing during the show. I had to learn to trust myself more in one of the most challenging roles I've undertaken so far at film school so far to get ready for a live 30-minute news program each week.

  • Leadership Lesson

During my last semester working at The Ithacan, one thing I learned from this role is how important it is to ensure an effective transition between E-boards. Throughout my two semesters as Life and Culture Editors, I've quickly had to get familiar with Adobe InDesign, AP style and the weekly structure of how the paper runs, which can be very demanding and stressful. A lot of the skills I've gotten ingrained in me like muscle memory, so it was important to take a step back and be able to help other student leaders understand what the job is like. Passing down information and knowledge, as well as being honest about the expectations of a job, is crucial as a leader to best prepare future leaders who are taking on the role moving forward.

Fall 2022

  • IC Unbound Dance Team: This semester I decided to choreograph another dance for the company on top of being in 4 other dances. A leadership lesson I learned in choreographing and teaching a dance for IC Unbound is the importance of understanding and patience. In my dance this semester, I had 12 people to teach, which is more than I’ve had before. The dance style of Jazz was also new for me to teach other people. At times, it was overwhelming because different people learn differently and I found the ideas difficult to convey. The skills of patience and understanding were extremely important here so that I could have everybody’s questions answered and get everybody on the same page at each rehearsal. This experience pushed me a lot not only in the dance world, but in my leadership experiences overall.

  • The Ithacan: This was my first semester as Life & Culture Editor, which was definitely my most challenging leadership role yet. I am responsible for running and manage the Life & Culture Section of the paper (primarily the reviews), including pitching stories, editing reviews, features and columns, working with other editors and the Editor-in-Chief to produce daily content, and managing a team of staff writers by keeping them on top of deadlines and teaching writing workshops.

  • Buzzsaw Magazine: I had my first official semester as News & Views editor and Social Media Manager. Overall, I am responsible for pitching and editing articles, holding writing workshops, copy editing and proofreading, on top of helping to promote the magazine on the Instagram.

  • New York Film and Television Student Alliance (NYFTSA)I continued my work as co-social media manager, helping to promote the club and get us some of our highest turnout in years. Toward the end of the semester, I was offered the position of Vice President (VP). Starting next semester, I will be expected to communicate with the other NYFTSA chapters across the state and help coordinate our yearly summit.

  • Writing Center Tutor: This semester I also took on another part-time job as a writing center tutor. A leadership lesson I learned during my time tutoring at The Writing Center, a new leadership role I took on this semester, is the importance of learning from each other, even if you are in a position of power as a leader. As a writing tutor, you are seen as an expert, and people come up to you for help on their writing, but the most productive tutoring sessions I have had were the ones where we both bounced ideas off of each other. I also learned a lot from my clients about different styles of writing and how to best help people.

Spring 2022

  • IC Unbound Dance Team: In IC Unbound Dance Company, I took on the leadership role of being a choreographer this semester in addition to being a part of other dances. By taking on this role, I deepened my involvement and learned a lot of leadership lessons. Choreographing was something that was scary and terrifying because it's something I've never done in a formal capacity, but it is something I have always wanted to do. It was a huge challenge for me, but seeing my dance come together throughout the semester and being in charge has been one of the most rewarding things I've ever done. I had to communicate with the E-Board on the progress of my dance, manage and teach a dance to a group of students, and overall helped to lead the group to success on show day. Therefore, I've learned that oftentimes, the most rewarding leadership roles are the ones that place us out of our comfort zone and encourage us to put ourselves out there. It is important as leaders to always be pushing ourselves into new roles that help us grow and change to become better people.

  • The Ithacan: I continued my work writing feature articles and reviews for the Life & Culture section of the paper. As a leader, I grew in my interpersonal skills by conducting more interviews and communicating more with my editors. I applied for an Editor position for Fall 2022 and will be one of the Life & Culture editors next semester!

  • Buzzsaw Magazine: My first semester shadowing as News & Views editor has been a great experience and has helped to put me out of my comfort zone. I've gotten a lot more experience with helping edit articles and collaborating with the other editors to help make the magazine the best it can be.

  • ICTV: This semester was my first as a part of ICTV, where I was a Camera Operator for "ICTV Reports" and a writer for "After Hours," "The Mind's Eye" and "The Universal Truth." Joining this organization has helped me to become a stronger leader within the entertainment industry, which is my particular field of study.

  • Office Assistant for the Office of International Programs and Extended Studies: I continued my part-time job at the OIPES Office and helped facilitate the office's move for next semester from Job Hall to the Peggy William Ryan Center.

  • New York Film and Television Student Alliance (NYFTSA): I continued my position as co-social media manager and helped to plan and coordinate our big yearly trip to NYC. During our weekend trip where we toured museums, studios and meet with Park alumni, I helped to take over the Instagram account and posted pictures, videos and interactive content to promote our club.

  • IC Film Society: I continued to attend their weekly screenings and discover some amazing new films.

Fall 2021

  • The Ithacan: I work as a staff writer, writing articles in the Life & Culture section of the paper. I primarily focus on film reviews, but also write feature articles and music reviews. I attend weekly staff meetings and keep in close contact and communication with the editors and fellow staff members. I conduct regular interviews with expected outreach in the community. I also use AP style guide. I applied for an Editor position next semester to help grow my leadership skills!

  • Leadership lessons I learned by being a staff writer for The Ithacan include the importance of communication and taking the initiative to reach out as a leader without waiting for somebody to ask for information. This was especially important in getting interviews for articles and communicating with the editors about whom I was interviewing and giving them regular updates on my articles. In such a task as running a newspaper, it is extremely important to not only do your part, but let others know when your part is done because they are depending on you. It is a collaborative effort. This applies to any group setting or large-scale effort, and I am grateful to have gotten the opportunity to learn these lessons that I can take with me as I continue to become a better leader. This can also be taken into my future film and writing career, as this experience of writing for a professional college newspaper is helping to prepare me for what to expect in my field.

  • Buzzsaw Magazine: I work as a staff writer, writing articles. I primarily focus on film reviews in the "Ministry of Cool" section along with upcoming poetry in "Prose & Cons" and satire in "Sawdust." I keep in regular communication with editors and fellow staff members. I applied for an Editor position next semester to help grow my leadership skills!

  • Office Assistant for the Office of International Programs and Extended Studies: This is my job on campus. I assist the staff of the Office of International Programs and Extended Studies with the daily operations of the department and general administrative duties. I welcome students who come into the building and helping them with what they need. I respond promptly and professionally to e-mails through Outlook, answer phone calls, manage client traffic, copy, scan, complete routine departmental activities, manage department social media accounts, etc.

  • IC Unbound Dance Team: I am one of the newest dancers on the team this semester. Joining this group has been great for my confidence-building which is making me a better leader and person overall.

  • New York Film and Television Student Alliance (NYFTSA): I am a co-social media manager for the New York Film and Television Student Alliance, working primarily with the Instagram Feed. This is a great leadership role that has helped me develop my skills in communicating with others and reaching out in the community.

  • DKA Professional Cinematic Society: I am an associate in this cinematic organization. Meeting new people who are also passionate about cinema has fostered a greater sense of community for me at Ithaca.

  • IC Film Society: I regularly attend their Friday night film screenings. It is wonderful to have a sense of community with fellow film lovers.
