HERE ARE SOME OF MY GOALS.
Fall 2023
MMM Involvement Goal
The MMM involvement goal I wrote for myself is to become a leader in some sort of LGBTQ+ organization on campus. When I heard that colleagues at The Ithacan were hoping to open up an IC chapter of the National Association of LGBTQ+ Journalists, I put my name out there and immediately expressed my interest in joining the E-Board. After a voting process, I was elected as treasurer this semester. As our organization is still fairly new, our main initiative this semester has been getting our name out there in the community. As an LGBTQ+ journalist passionate about queer issues, being involved with this organization has been incredibly rewarding and helped me connect with other LGBTQ+ journalists on campus.
MMM Community Service Goal
The MMM community service goal I wrote for myself was to volunteer at an event outside of Downtown Ithaca in an effort to meet more people in the upstate New York area and try something new. I accomplished this by attending the Service Saturday event in Brooktondale, New York, and intend on making similar volunteering efforts next semester.
MMM Leadership Education Goal
The MMM leadership education goal I wrote for myself at the beginning of the semester was to continue attending three different SLIs on different tracks. I ended up choosing Leading in a Diverse World, Leading Self and Leading @ IC with my SLIs. Setting this goal is putting me closer to my goal of achieving the SLI certificates by the time I graduate and helping me diversify my skills as a leader, ensuring that I'm broadening my perspectives with each new session.
2022-2023 Academic Year
MMM Involvement Goal
The MMM involvement goal I wrote for myself at the beginning of the semester was to put myself out there more by successfully teaching a skill to people I’ve never taught people before. I went after this goal by deciding to choreograph a Jazz dance for IC Unbound, a new style of dance that I’d never taught people before (previously, I'd done Hip-Hop). Although the full success of my goal will be determined by how the actual performance goes on December 4, so far rehearsals have gotten better and better each week and I have become more confident in my ability to teach Jazz choreography. I asked my dancers recently how they have been feeling about the dance and they said they feel great and are extremely excited to perform - as am I! Pushing myself in this way showed me that going out of my comfort zone in my involvement makes me a better leader in the end.
MMM Community Service Goal
The MMM community service goal I wrote for myself at the beginning of the semester was to choose a community service project that is personal to me and my life. As a result, I ended up feeling more fulfilled by the service I did at the Ithaca City Cemetry. My personal connection to cemeteries and wanting to visit loved ones in peace made my work there feel so much more meaningful and as I compared this to previous community service projects I have done, I realized that I felt better after this one than previous Service Saturdays I have been involved with. This also helped me find more closure in the wake of some deaths in my family recently.
MMM Leadership Education Goal
The MMM leadership education goal I wrote for myself at the beginning of the semester was to pursue more workshops that are closely related to my major of study and biggest passion in life: writing. I ended up attending one SLI workshop, the Distinguished Visiting Writer Reading, which is one step I've taken toward reaching my goal. Next semester, I hope to continue pursuing this goal and make more meaningful strides in connecting the areas of study in my writing classes to the leadership skills learned in SLI sessions. Continuing to find these connections will make me both a better leader and a better writer.
2021-2022 Academic Year
MMM Involvement Goal
At the beginning of the semester, I identified my involvement goal to be involved in a student organization or team at Ithaca College that is truly meaningful to me and will help enrich the lives of other students and faculty on campus. Through my time so far writing for The Ithacan, I feel that I am reaching this goal by writing various film reviews, something I am truly passionate about and is meaningful for me. This helps inform people about what to watch and what is worth their time. Writing feature articles about various events and organizations in the community is also meaningful to me as I got to take the time to interview new people and find out about things going on around campus for myself. I reached out to readers of the paper with new clubs to join and things to do on campus. For the future, I hope to join more LGBTQ+ centered organizations (I had a time conflict this semester) such as Prism, as that community is meaningful to me and will help me achieve my goal on a more personal level.
MMM Community Service Goal
At the beginning of the semester, I identified my community service/civic engagement goal to engage in the community through a service that I have never helped before or a topic I am not as familiar with. Volunteering for the Service Saturday at the Ithaca Re-Use center helped to satisfy my goal as I was previously unfamiliar with thrifting stores and the act of re-using materials. This was an extremely beneficial goal for me to set as it helped me to develop more of an open mind as a leader. Going forward, I hope to venture out and take on even more unique and different community service projects that are unfamiliar to me and can help me grow and learn.
MMM Leadership Education Goal
At the beginning of the semester, I identified my Leadership Education goal as attending three different SLI tracks. I ended up choosing a Leading in a Diverse World, Leading Others, and Leading Self Track in my SLI sessions. In doing so, I set a goal that helped me gain a variety of different perspectives and see all the various ways in which I can become a better leader. My hope for my time here at Ithaca College is to focus on these three given tracks and continue attending workshops to help further develop my ideas and make me a better leader. I truly enjoyed the variety of topics discussed at these workshops that made me realize all the different ways I should be able to lead in this world; setting this goal helped this idea come to fruition for me.
